Oliver Jones Joins Amazon MGM Studios as U.K. Scripted Commissioner
Oliver Jones, a seasoned scripted executive, is making a significant career move by departing Apple TV after six successful years to join Amazon MGM Studios as the senior commissioner for U.K. scripted content. This transition was announced in an internal email sent by Nicole Clemens, the VP and head of international originals at the studio, to her teams.
Jones will be starting his new role in May and will be based in London, where he will lead the commissioning of new U.K. scripted series. He will work closely with Clemens, and existing scripted commissioners Gemma Brandler and Punit Mattoo will report to him.
Clemens expressed her excitement about Oliver joining the team, highlighting his track record of developing premium international content. She emphasized that this appointment reflects the studio’s commitment to investing in world-class U.K. scripted programming for both local and global audiences.
During his time at Apple TV, Jones played a pivotal role in shaping the streamer’s international originals strategy. He was responsible for guiding projects across development, production, and global launch. Some of his notable credits include “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters,” starring Kurt Russell, “Masters of the Air,” produced by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks, and Alfonso Cuarón’s “Disclaimer,” featuring Cate Blanchett and Kevin Kline. His current project in production is “Berlin Noir,” written by Oscar-winning screenwriter Peter Straughan and starring Colin Firth, Jack Lowden, and Jessica Gunning.
Prior to his role at Apple, Jones held senior positions at Fremantle, The Weinstein Company, and Imagine Television, where he worked on various successful projects such as “The Mosquito Coast,” “Yellowstone,” and “Empire.”
Jones’ move to Amazon MGM Studios comes at a time when the studio is ramping up its U.K. scripted content. Recent launches like “The Girlfriend,” “Steal,” and “Harlan Coben’s Lazarus” have been well-received by audiences globally. The studio has also greenlit new projects like “Dirty,” a police thriller from writer Matt Charman, and an adaptation of Chloe Walsh’s BookTok novel “Boys of Tommen.”
In a statement, Jones expressed his gratitude for his time at Apple TV and his excitement to embark on a new adventure with Amazon MGM Studios. He praised the studio’s commitment to telling ambitious and provocative stories and highlighted the increased investment in the U.K. market as a driving force behind his decision to join the team.
Overall, Jones’ move to Amazon MGM Studios marks a strategic shift for both him and the studio, signaling a new chapter in their quest to deliver high-quality scripted content to audiences around the world.
