Ooops! Man robbed FedEx driver while on electronic monitoring, ankle bracelet GPS shows

Bernard Meeks, a 21-year-old man from Chicago, is facing armed robbery charges after allegedly participating in a robbery of a FedEx driver while wearing a GPS-enabled electronic monitoring bracelet. Prosecutors are using data from the ankle monitor to place him at the scene of the crime during the incident.

According to prosecutors, Meeks joined three other individuals in confronting a FedEx driver on the South Side on January 31. GPS records from the ankle monitor tracked Meeks from his home to the robbery location and showed him present at the scene for several minutes during the robbery.

The incident began when the FedEx driver attempted to deliver a package to 21-year-old Dylan Longstreet on South Forest Avenue. When no one answered the door for the package requiring a signature, the driver continued his route. Allegedly, Longstreet recruited Meeks and two others to track down the FedEx truck and rob the driver at gunpoint.

During the robbery, Longstreet pointed a firearm at the driver while demanding his package, identifying himself by name and address. One of the accomplices grabbed the driver’s sweatshirt in an attempt to pull him from the truck, but the driver managed to hold onto the steering wheel and remain in his seat. The driver used his work device to locate Longstreet’s package and retrieve it from the cargo area.

Longstreet, Meeks, and another accomplice entered the truck and took Longstreet’s package along with 10 additional packages before fleeing. The entire incident was captured on the truck’s surveillance cameras, with Longstreet even exposing a distinctive tattoo on his arm to the camera lens while trying to remove a camera.

Although the FedEx driver could not identify Meeks in a photo lineup, two Chicago police officers who had previously arrested him in an unrelated gun possession case recognized him during the robbery investigation. Additionally, GPS records from Meeks’ ankle monitor showed his movements from his home to the location of the robbery, where he remained for approximately six minutes during the crime.

Following the investigation, Judge Antara Rivera ordered Meeks to be detained pending trial on an armed robbery charge. Longstreet, who was also involved in the robbery, is awaiting trial as well.
