Pakistan says a deal to end the Iran war is closer than ever as Tehran shows signs of optimism

ISLAMABAD — The possibility of reaching a peace agreement to end the conflict with Iran seemed more promising as Pakistan, a key mediator, indicated that a deal was closer than ever before, and Iran expressed optimism.

President Donald Trump announced on social media that the agreement was set to be signed soon, with the opening of the Strait of Hormuz expected to follow. However, Iran’s foreign ministry spokesperson mentioned that the signing might not happen immediately but could occur in the coming days.

Both parties were preparing to sign the agreement electronically.

In the meantime, Trump was scheduled to address demining efforts in the Strait of Hormuz during the upcoming Group of Seven summit. Additionally, Iran announced plans for funeral ceremonies honoring former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in the initial attack of the war, to take place in July.

An anonymous senior U.S. official stated that Trump intended to hold discussions with the leaders of Egypt, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates during the G7 summit to address efforts in winding down the conflict. Both Britain and France from the G7 expressed willingness to assist with demining operations once the war is halted.

The ceasefire, which has been in place since April 7, was expected to lead to a finalized agreement within the next 24 hours, according to Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. Iran voiced optimism while emphasizing the need for more time to finalize the memorandum of understanding.

Key issues such as Iran’s nuclear program and enriched uranium were at the center of the negotiations, with Trump vowing to address these concerns once peace is achieved.

The recent progress came after a series of escalations between Iran, the U.S., and Israel, which threatened to disrupt the ceasefire and escalate tensions in the region. However, both sides seemed determined to reach a peaceful resolution.

Funeral arrangements for Ayatollah Khamenei were scheduled to take place in various cities in Iran, marking the end of an era and the beginning of a new chapter in the country’s leadership.

The legacy of Ayatollah Khamenei, who played a significant role in shaping Iran’s political landscape, will be commemorated during the funeral ceremonies, symbolizing a transition to a new era for the Islamic Republic.
