BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — The tragic death of college student James “Jimmy” Gracey, who went missing while on a break in Barcelona, has left many shocked. Spanish regional police reported on Friday that Gracey was likely the victim of an accidental incident.

Gracey’s body was discovered in the waters near a beach, close to where he was last seen outside a popular Barcelona nightclub with his friends in the early hours of Tuesday.

Catalonia’s regional police spokesperson mentioned that initial indications suggest Gracey’s death was accidental, pending an autopsy.

The 20-year-old was last spotted outside the Shoko nightclub around 3 a.m. and did not return to his rented room, causing concern among his family in Elmhurst, Illinois. His phone was later recovered by the police.

The Gracey family has requested privacy and prayers as they cope with the loss of their beloved son and relative.

Barcelona, a renowned tourist destination, is generally considered safe for visitors, with concerns usually limited to pickpocketing incidents.

The city’s Mediterranean beaches, a short walk from the bustling city center, are a popular attraction for young tourists. The area where Gracey was last seen is known for its vibrant nightlife scene.

Gracey was described as a “great kid” by his aunt before the tragic confirmation of his death. The University of Alabama expressed its sorrow at the news, extending condolences to the Gracey family.
