Russian attack on Ukraine kills at least 11 and traps others in damaged buildings
Russia Launches Deadly Missile and Drone Attacks on Ukraine
On Tuesday, Ukraine was plunged into chaos as Russia launched a devastating onslaught of missiles and drones, resulting in the deaths of at least 11 people and leaving dozens more injured. The attacks targeted major cities including Kyiv, Dnipro, Poltava, Kharkiv, and Zaporizhzhia, with Ukrainian air defense forces managing to intercept a significant number of the incoming missiles and drones.
The assault involved 73 missiles and 656 drones, causing widespread destruction and trapping civilians under the rubble of their homes. In Kyiv alone, four people were killed and 63 others were injured, including children. Residential buildings and civilian infrastructure in eight districts of the city were severely damaged.
Further east, in the Dnipropetrovsk region, six people lost their lives and 36 were injured in the city of Dnipro. Tragically, a rescue worker was killed in a second attack as they tried to assist those affected by the initial strikes. Kharkiv also suffered significant damage, with at least 14 people injured and numerous buildings destroyed.
The night sky was lit up by explosions as the relentless bombardment continued, prompting President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to issue warnings and urge citizens to seek shelter. The city of Kyiv was on high alert, with residents bracing for the worst as the sound of sirens filled the air.
Rescue efforts were hampered by the scale of the destruction, with reports of people trapped beneath collapsed buildings in various districts. One harrowing account came from Olena Dniprovska, who described the moment her apartment was engulfed by the blast wave, leaving her and her husband injured and homeless.
As the conflict escalates, Ukrainian officials are calling for additional air defense systems to combat Russia’s ballistic missile attacks. While the country has had some success in intercepting drones, the threat posed by incoming missiles remains a critical challenge for its defenses.
The people of Ukraine continue to endure unimaginable suffering as they face the full force of Russia’s military aggression. The international community must stand in solidarity with Ukraine and condemn these heinous acts of violence.
