Sabres agree to send Alex Tuch to the Capitals as part of sign-and-trade deal, AP source says

The Buffalo Sabres have made a significant move by agreeing to a sign-and-trade deal that will send veteran forward Alex Tuch to the Washington Capitals. This news comes from a source with knowledge of the transaction who spoke to The Associated Press on Wednesday.

To facilitate the trade, the Sabres first signed Tuch to an eight-year, $84 million contract. The person who provided this information requested anonymity because the agreement and trade had not yet been officially announced.

This sign-and-trade deal was the Sabres’ last opportunity to receive something in return for Tuch. Prior to this, Sabres general manager Jarmo Kekalainen had indicated that there was no progress in contract negotiations with Tuch, leading to the expectation that the player would enter free agency once the NHL’s signing period opened.

By signing with Buffalo first, Tuch was able to secure an eight-year contract, which would not have been possible if he had entered free agency. Tuch, a 10-year NHL veteran, has been a consistent goal scorer, surpassing 20 goals in four of his five seasons with Buffalo and scoring 33 or more goals in each of the past two years.

During his time in Buffalo, Tuch has amassed 139 goals and 309 points in 360 games while playing a key role on the top line. In his overall NHL career, he has recorded 200 goals and 448 points in 615 games.

The decision to trade Tuch comes on the heels of another significant move by the Sabres. The team recently traded defenseman Bowen Byram and forward Jordan Greenway to the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for the No. 4 pick in the upcoming draft, a second-round selection, and defenseman Louis Crevier.

Kekalainen disclosed that Byram had expressed a lack of interest in remaining in Buffalo once his current contract expired next summer.

This latest development underscores the Sabres’ commitment to reshaping their roster and positioning the team for future success. Fans will be eagerly anticipating the impact of these moves as the new season approaches.
