Shailene Woodley on ‘Paradise’ Prep, Delivery Scene
Shailene Woodley recently shared her experience filming a powerful birth scene with Sterling K. Brown in episode 4 of the hit series “Paradise.” Woodley revealed that she was so immersed in the moment that she accidentally left a bruise on Brown’s arm while gripping him during the intense delivery scene. She poured her heart and soul into the performance, feeling as though she was actually taking her last breath. Woodley admitted that she was moved to tears when she watched the finished episode at home, not even catching a glimpse of Brown’s face during filming.
Woodley’s journey to joining the cast of “Paradise” was a whirlwind, as she was offered the role of Annie Clay by creator Dan Fogelman after just coming off five months on Broadway. Despite the quick turnaround and incomplete script, Woodley dove headfirst into her character, a former medical student turned Graceland tour guide who falls in love, becomes pregnant, and tragically dies during childbirth. The lack of preparation actually worked in Woodley’s favor, as her background in live theater had taught her the importance of slowing down and truly inhabiting a character.
The Season 2 premiere, titled “Graceland,” focused entirely on Annie’s journey, asking viewers to invest in a new character and leave behind familiar faces. Woodley spent hours on set, crafting Annie’s interior life in silence, imagining her talking to an Elvis portrait on the wall and exploring how she would cope with years of isolation. This attention to detail and emotional depth brought Annie to life on screen, showcasing Woodley’s dedication to her craft.
During the emotional birth scene, director Ken Olin allowed Woodley and Brown the freedom to find the moment organically, resulting in a raw and authentic performance. The presence of real nurses and midwives on set added to the realism of the scene, with Woodley praising Brown as a true “beast” of an actor. Annie’s story ultimately revolves around facing fears and the power of love to break down barriers, a theme that resonated deeply with Woodley.
As for the possibility of Annie returning in flashbacks for Season 3, Woodley expressed immediate interest, stating that she would jump at the chance to revisit the character. Woodley’s portrayal of Annie in “Paradise” showcases her talent and dedication as an actor, leaving a lasting impact on both the audience and her fellow cast members.
