Snow, cold front headed for Northeast, including New York, putting spring on hold
As winter comes back with a vengeance in the Northeast, residents are bracing themselves for another round of snow and cold temperatures. A fast-moving clipper system is making its way through the region, bringing light snow to major cities like Boston and Burlington, Vt. Upstate New York has already reported snowfall, with Syracuse seeing the first flakes.
This unexpected late-season snowfall is a reminder that the harsh winter of 2025-2026 is not yet over. From record-breaking snow totals to powerful blizzards, the Northeast has been hit hard this season, leaving communities buried under feet of snow and struggling to dig out.
The FOX Forecast Center predicts that light snow showers and below-average temperatures will continue from the Great Lakes to New England until Wednesday. While not unusually cold for this time of year, temperatures will dip into the 40s and 50s, closer to seasonal averages. An area of low pressure moving into the Great Lakes will bring in enough moisture to fuel light snow, with 1 to 3 inches possible in some areas.
Cities in the path of the snow include Buffalo, Syracuse, Burlington, Albany, and possibly Boston and New York City. The FOX Forecast Center notes that most of these areas typically see their last measurable snowfall by early to mid-April.
In addition to the snow, a surge of cold air is expected to sweep through the region, with temperatures dropping 10 to 20 degrees below average. Wednesday is expected to be the coldest day, with wind chills in the 20s across interior parts of the Northeast. However, by Thursday, temperatures are expected to rebound and return closer to seasonal averages.
While the late-season snow may be a surprise, residents are advised to bundle up and prepare for the cold snap that is headed their way. Stay warm and stay safe as winter makes one final push before spring fully takes hold.
