Some Social Security Recipients to Be Paid Twice in October

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients can expect to receive two payments in October, which may seem like a bonus but is actually just a part of the regular schedule. The SSI program, administered by Social Security, provides benefits of up to $967 per month for individuals who have little to no income and resources and are blind, disabled, or 65 years old and above.

Typically, SSI benefits are paid to around 7.4 million recipients on a monthly basis. However, the double payment in October is nothing to be concerned about. SSI benefits are usually distributed on the first of the month, but if that day falls on a weekend or a holiday, payments are sent out earlier.

For example, in September, there was no SSI payment on Sept. 1 due to Labor Day. Therefore, September’s benefits were paid on Aug. 29 instead.

The upcoming payment schedule for SSI checks in October is as follows:

– Payments will be issued on Oct. 1 and Oct. 31.
– The double payment in October is essentially the November payment arriving early, as Nov. 1 falls on a Saturday.

After October, there will be another instance of two SSI payments in the same month in 2025. The payment schedule for the remainder of the year is as follows:

– Oct. 1: Regular payment for October
– Oct. 31: Early payment for November (due to Nov. 1 falling on a Saturday)
– Dec. 1: Regular payment for December
– Dec. 31: Early payment for January 2026 (due to New Year’s Day)

It’s important to note that individuals who claimed Social Security before May 1997 and those receiving both Social Security and SSI benefits are on a slightly different payment schedule. They will receive their Social Security payment on the third of the month in October, November, and December, while the SSI payment will be doubled in October.

In other news, the Social Security Administration is transitioning to electronic payments and discontinuing paper checks. SSI recipients are encouraged to contact 1-800-772-1213 for assistance in setting up a new payment method.
