Some TSA officers say they’re still hurting after receiving backpay

Despite receiving their backpay, Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers are still facing financial hardships as they try to recover from the impact of the recent government shutdowns. Many officers are struggling to pay off late fees, creditors, and missed bill payments accumulated during the shutdowns.

TSA employees have been informed by their managers that they cannot accept donations related to their TSA positions, as it is against government regulations for federal employees to accept gifts due to their official positions. This has added to the financial burden faced by many TSA officers who are trying to make ends meet.

Joseph Cerletti, a TSA worker at Oakland International Airport and union representative, shared that while he received all of his backpay, there are other officers who have reported missing portions of their paychecks. Acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis assured that efforts are being made to resolve these issues and complete processing for the outstanding payments as soon as possible.

The delay in receiving full pay has led to missed opportunities for assistance, such as a local church’s donation of groceries for TSA officers being canceled. The uncertainty surrounding funding for the Department of Homeland Security, which includes TSA, has further added to the financial stress experienced by TSA employees.

President Donald Trump’s recent directive to use funds for TSA operations to pay the agency’s workforce has provided some relief, but there are concerns about the sustainability of this funding. TSA officers have been informed that it is uncertain how long they will continue to be paid through this directive.

Despite the challenges they are facing, TSA officers remain dedicated to their duty of ensuring the safety and security of travelers. The ongoing financial struggles highlight the importance of finding a long-term solution to prevent similar situations in the future and provide stability for federal employees like TSA officers.

Our brave and patriotic public servants have been working tirelessly to protect and defend our country, and finally, help is on the way for them. President Trump issued an order on Friday to provide support to our dedicated public servants, although the legal authority for this order remains unclear.

The White House has not yet responded to inquiries about the specifics of the order, but the essence of it is to acknowledge the hard work and sacrifices made by our public servants. This support comes at a crucial time when many of our public servants have been working without pay during the recent partial government shutdown.

One group that has been particularly affected by the shutdown is the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) employees. Throughout the 48 days of the shutdown, TSA officers have been on duty without pay, while members of Congress continued to receive their salaries. This disparity in treatment has put a strain on TSA officers, many of whom had already depleted their savings during the previous government shutdown.

The shutdown, which lasted 43 days, was the longest in the nation’s history and had a significant impact on federal employees. TSA officers, in particular, have been struggling to make ends meet and have faced financial hardships as a result of the shutdown. The situation was further exacerbated by the fact that some Senate Democrats were withholding funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) until reforms were made to Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Despite these challenges, there is hope on the horizon for our public servants. Data from DHS shows that the callout rates for TSA officers have started to decrease as they begin to receive their pay. This is a positive sign that the support for our public servants is making a difference and helping to alleviate some of the hardships they have faced.

In conclusion, our brave and patriotic public servants deserve our gratitude and support for their unwavering dedication to protecting and defending our country. The recent order issued by President Trump is a step in the right direction towards providing much-needed assistance to those who have sacrificed so much for the greater good. Let us continue to show our appreciation for their hard work and commitment to serving our nation.
