Southeast Asian leaders will reaffirm core values in veiled Mideast war rebuke

In a move seen as a response to recent conflicts in the Middle East, Southeast Asian leaders are set to release a declaration emphasizing the importance of upholding international law, sovereignty, and freedom of navigation. The draft declaration, obtained by The Associated Press, outlines plans to address energy shortages and other global issues stemming from the ongoing war.

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is expected to issue the declaration during their annual summit in Cebu, Philippines. The summit, hosted by Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., will focus on energy security, food supply, and the protection of Southeast Asian workers in the Middle East.

The region, home to about 680 million people, faces various challenges, including territorial disputes with China, civil unrest in Myanmar, and border conflicts between Thailand and Cambodia. The ongoing war in the Middle East has further exacerbated these issues, leading to economic repercussions and threats to the safety of Southeast Asian citizens working in the region.

To address these challenges, ASEAN leaders are planning to implement a crisis plan that includes ratifying agreements for emergency fuel sharing, developing a regional power grid, and exploring alternative sources of energy. The plan also emphasizes the importance of maintaining open sea lanes and ensuring the unimpeded flow of essential goods, in accordance with international law.

ASEAN, comprised of ten member states including Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, and East Timor, aims to strengthen regional resilience and cooperation in the face of ongoing challenges.
