Staggering cost to raise a child in California revealed

California is known for its high cost of living, and this extends to the expenses associated with raising children. Recent data shows that families in the state are facing rapidly increasing costs driven by factors such as housing, child care, and insurance.

According to a recent analysis by LendingTree, it now costs an average of $303,418 to raise a child from birth through age 18 in the United States. This amounts to about $16,857 per year. The estimate is based on a married, two-income household earning the national median income of $83,730 and includes major expenses such as housing, food, child care, transportation, and health insurance, with tax credits taken into account.

California ranks as the fourth most expensive state to raise a young child, with families spending approximately $33,692 annually during a child’s first five years. The state’s high costs are attributed to various factors, including elevated housing prices, child care expenses, transportation, food, and health insurance premiums. Only Hawaii, Maryland, and Massachusetts rank higher in terms of the cost of raising a child.

Nationally, child care remains one of the largest financial burdens for families. The average annual cost for care for an infant and a 4-year-old is $28,190. To keep these costs within the federal affordability benchmark of 7% of household income, a family would need to earn about $402,708 per year. This is significantly higher than the average household income for families with two children, which is $145,656.

Despite a slight decline in costs during a child’s first five years, with a 0.3% decrease to $29,325, the overall cost of raising a child continues to rise across most of the country. California, in particular, remains one of the most expensive places for families to raise children.

The report reflects a broader national trend, with costs rising by 1.9% over the past year and increasing in 39 states and the District of Columbia. Several states, including Nebraska, Montana, Maine, and Wisconsin, have recorded double-digit increases in the cost of raising a child. In contrast, the most affordable states for raising children are primarily located in the South, with Mississippi, Alabama, and South Dakota reporting significantly lower annual costs driven by cheaper child care and housing.

In conclusion, the cost of raising a child in California and across the United States continues to rise, posing financial challenges for many families. It is important for parents to be aware of these expenses and plan accordingly to ensure the well-being of their children.
