Suspect arrested in England after 4 die in failed channel crossing from France to UK

LONDON —
British authorities apprehended a Sudanese man on Friday on suspicion of risking lives after four migrants tragically lost their lives while attempting to board an inflatable boat to cross the English Channel.

Two men and two women perished, while 38 others were rescued on Thursday after being swept away by strong currents at a French beach where they were embarking on the hazardous journey to Britain.

The 27-year-old suspect was among over 70 migrants who proceeded with the voyage and was apprehended at a migrant processing facility on England’s southeast coast under a new border and immigration statute that includes charges for endangering lives during a sea journey to the U.K.

The suspect’s specific role in the crossing remains unclear at this time.

The tragic incident unfolded at Equihen Beach in Calais as migrants endeavored to reach a “taxi-boat,” typically a small motorized inflatable vessel that picks up individuals along the extensive northern French coastline.

This method has gained popularity among smugglers as authorities on the beaches work to prevent crossings by deflating the rafts that migrant groups inflate and transport to the water.

According to maritime regulations, French police do not intervene in the boats on the water to avoid jeopardizing lives.

The suspect remains in custody for further questioning, as investigators intend to interview other individuals who have crossed the channel.

In recent days, there has been a surge in attempted crossings and fatalities, with 102 individuals rescued in two operations on Wednesday. Last week, two individuals lost their lives in similar circumstances off the coast north of Calais.
