Suspect dead, bystander wounded after exchange of gunfire near White House: Secret Service
The Secret Service confirmed that officers shot and killed an armed man who opened fire at a White House checkpoint on Saturday evening. The incident also resulted in a bystander being struck by gunfire, although it was unclear how this occurred.
According to reports, the unidentified man approached the checkpoint at 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW around 6 p.m., took out a weapon from a bag, and started shooting at the officers stationed there. In response, Secret Service police officers returned fire, hitting the suspect. He was then taken to a nearby hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
The bystander who was nearby during the incident was also shot, but it was uncertain whether they were hit by the suspect’s initial gunfire or during the exchange of shots. The condition of the bystander was not immediately provided.
Fortunately, no Secret Service members were injured during the altercation, which is currently under investigation. FBI Director Kash Patel stated that the agency is on the scene and assisting the Secret Service, with updates to be provided as soon as possible.
At the time of the shooting, President Trump was in the Oval Office with aides Steven Cheung, Natalie Harp, and Margo Martin. Following the gunshots, reporters were instructed to seek shelter in the White House Press Briefing Room.
ABC News’ Selina Wang was at the White House filming for social media platforms when the incident occurred, prompting her and her crew to take cover. The chaotic situation led to police vehicles and armed Secret Service agents swarming the area around the White House.
