Swalwell sex scandal triggers expulsion showdown in Congress
Eric Swalwell’s alleged sex scandal has ignited a fierce battle in Congress as both Republicans and Democrats gear up for showdowns over Swalwell and other lawmakers with questionable pasts.
Florida Rep. Anna Paulina Luna has announced her intention to push for a House floor vote this week to remove Swalwell from office. This move comes on the heels of Swalwell’s decision to end his campaign for California governor. As lawmakers return from a two-week Spring break, Swalwell could potentially face an expulsion vote in the coming days.
The uproar surrounding Swalwell’s allegations could lead to unprecedented consequences on both sides of the aisle. Expelling a sitting member of the House is a rare occurrence, requiring a two-thirds majority vote. The most recent expulsion was of New York Rep. George Santos in 2023, following allegations of campaign finance violations and misuse of funds.
House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries is expected to counter the move against Swalwell by calling for the expulsion of Texas Republican Rep. Tony Gonzales, who is embroiled in a separate sexual scandal. Gonzales admitted to having an affair with a staffer who tragically took her own life. Despite denying any involvement in her death, Gonzales has decided not to seek reelection.
The back-and-forth expulsions may not end there, as other lawmakers come under scrutiny. Florida Republican Rep. Cory Mills has been linked to an assault on a woman, while Democratic Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick faces accusations of embezzling $5 million in federal disaster funds. Both have denied any wrongdoing.
Rep. Byron Donalds, a leading Republican candidate for Florida governor, voiced his support for expelling both Swalwell and Gonzales from the House during an appearance on NBC’s “Meet The Press.” Donalds emphasized the need to uphold the integrity of Congress and stated that such behavior is unacceptable.
The political landscape in Washington is poised for a tumultuous week as the fate of these lawmakers hangs in the balance. The upcoming expulsion votes could have far-reaching implications for both parties as they navigate through these scandals and controversies.
