Stampede at Haitian mountaintop fortress reportedly leaves at least 25 dead

A tragic incident occurred at the Citadelle Laferrière in northern Haiti, resulting in a stampede that claimed the lives of at least 25 individuals and left many others injured. The initial reports of a higher death toll were later revised by authorities.

The municipal authorities in Cap-Haïtien described the stampede as causing “numerous cases of asphyxiation, trampling, and loss of consciousness” during traditional festivities at the historical site in Milot. Several individuals were rushed to hospitals for treatment while others were reported missing.

Local authorities attributed the stampede to overcrowding and deficiencies in crowd management measures. An investigation has been launched by the Haitian National Police to determine the exact cause of the incident, with the death toll currently standing at 25. Autopsies are being conducted to shed light on the circumstances.

As of now, 30 individuals remain hospitalized, and the police have urged the public to refrain from spreading misinformation. The government of Haiti has expressed its condolences to the families of the victims affected by the tragedy at the Citadelle Laferrière.
