Teen arrested in shooting death of Indiana University grad Brett Scrogham
A tragic incident occurred in downtown Indianapolis when a 14-year-old suspect was arrested in connection with the shooting death of Brett Scrogham, a beloved Indiana University business school graduate. The incident took place in a parking garage near the Indiana Convention Center on May 28.
Chief Tanya Terry of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department expressed her sorrow for the loss of life and the impact of the tragedy on both the victim’s family and the suspect. The arrest of the teenager marks a significant development in the case, but it does not lessen the pain felt by those affected.
The shooting, described as a random act of violence between two strangers, took place on the third floor of the parking garage and is being investigated as a possible carjacking. The suspect, being held without bond, will face charges in juvenile court due to his age.
Brett Scrogham, a recent graduate of Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business, was on his way to meet his parents at a baseball game when he was killed. Described as brilliant and selfless by those who knew him, his untimely death shocked the community.
Senator Jim Banks honored Scrogham on the Senate floor, lamenting the loss of a promising young man and criticizing the city’s approach to violent crime. Following the arrest of the suspect, Chief Terry issued a warning to the youth of the city, emphasizing that underage individuals will be held accountable for their actions.
Terry called on parents and adults to take responsibility for preventing youth violence in their communities, urging them to be proactive and involved in the lives of young people. The tragedy serves as a reminder of the importance of community involvement and support in ensuring the safety and well-being of all individuals.
