The American dream is open to everyone, says son of immigrants
The American Dream is a concept that has been ingrained in the fabric of our nation since its inception. It is a belief that anyone, regardless of their background or circumstances, can achieve success and prosperity through hard work and determination. For Chinweze Ahaghotu, the Head of Portfolio Management at Galderma, a multinational pharmaceutical company, the American Dream has been a guiding force in his life.
Ahaghotu’s parents immigrated to the United States from Nigeria in the 1960s, seeking a better life and opportunities for their children. His father pursued higher education and became a professor at Howard University, while his mother also obtained a graduate degree. They instilled in Ahaghotu the importance of education and the pursuit of one’s dreams.
Growing up, Ahaghotu’s parents encouraged him to become a medical doctor, a common career path for children of Nigerian immigrants. Despite his love for science and biology, he knew that the medical field was not the right fit for him due to his aversion to blood and hospital settings. However, his passion for human health and research never wavered.
As the head of portfolio management at Galderma, Ahaghotu leads a team in pharmaceutical research and development, working towards innovative solutions in dermatological drugs. While his career may have been influenced by his parents’ aspirations, his dedication to improving human health is a testament to his own American Dream.
Ahaghotu firmly believes in the ideals of the American Dream, which he sees as a fundamental part of the country’s foundation. The notion that all individuals are created equal and have the right to pursue life, liberty, and happiness resonates deeply with him. The American Dream, in his eyes, is a beacon of hope and opportunity for all who are willing to work hard and strive for success.
The American Dream Video Project, in partnership with the Milken Center for Advancing the American Dream, highlights stories like Ahaghotu’s that showcase the diverse pathways to achieving success in America. As the country celebrates its 250th anniversary, the project aims to inspire others to pursue their dreams and create their own version of the American Dream. Through storytelling and interactive exhibits, the Milken Center offers a platform for individuals to share their unique journeys and celebrate the spirit of opportunity that defines the American Dream.
