The Whole Entire Universe: 21 Million, One Painting
Bitcoin, with its fixed supply of 21 million coins, is a concept that remains abstract to many. The idea of scarcity is coded into the protocol, making it one of the most significant design decisions in the history of money. However, artist Anik Malcolm has found a way to bring this abstraction to life in a tangible form.
“The Whole Entire Universe” is a project that aims to represent each bitcoin as an individual bead, painstakingly painted by hand over the course of more than 900 hours. The result is a large-format oil painting that will debut at Bitcoin 2026 at The Venetian Resort in Las Vegas. The idea of showing 21 million of something led Malcolm to a mathematical journey that uncovered surprising patterns and connections.
The number 21 million does not neatly fit into a cube, but through a series of calculations, Malcolm arrived at a solution that involved removing 4,096 beads per side in a symmetrical manner. The resulting pattern, with squares halving from 64×64 down to 2×2, mirrors bitcoin’s halving mechanism. This discovery was both surprising and awe-inspiring for Malcolm, leading him to describe the piece as a “still life of Bitcoin.”
The process of creating the oil painting was a meditative and transformative experience for Malcolm. Spending over 900 hours meticulously painting each bead three times – body, highlight, shadow – allowed him to deeply connect with the subject. The repetitive nature of the task, combined with a carefully curated soundtrack, enhanced the spiritual and meditative aspects of the project.
Despite starting as a small-scale drawing, the concept has grown into a full-scale oil painting and plans for a monumental public sculpture in Roatán. The idea seems to demand a bigger canvas, with each iteration revealing new dimensions and connections. Adam Back has taken notice of the work, but Malcolm hopes that even those without a background in math or Bitcoin’s technical intricacies can appreciate the beauty and symmetry of the piece.
As “The Whole Entire Universe” prepares to debut at Bitcoin 2026, Malcolm invites visitors to experience the calming effect of the cube’s symmetry and pattern. The painting, with its deep mathematical underpinnings and spiritual resonance, aims to provide a moment of contemplation and reflection for all who encounter it. In a world where money is in need of fixing, projects like this offer a glimpse into the transformative power of art and creativity.
