These companies have shifted their headquarters out of California
Numerous companies have departed California in recent years to avoid escalating costs, stringent regulations, and high taxes. Even the company that monitors business exodus from California, CBRE, has relocated out of the state as well.
While California boasts the highest population and economy in the US, firms have opted to move to states like Florida and Texas due to the absence of state income tax. The progressive policies in California, particularly on climate and business regulations, have often been cited as reasons for this corporate migration.
California holds the record for having the most business regulatory restrictions among all states, on top of the already burdensome costs and taxes that businesses and consumers face. Here are some notable companies that have made the decision to leave the Golden State:
1. Chevron:
Chevron shifted its headquarters from San Ramon, California to Houston, Texas in August 2024 after a 145-year presence in California. CEO Mike Wirth emphasized that the move was not politically motivated but was aimed at being closer to the heart of the energy industry in Houston.
2. Tesla, SpaceX, and X:
Elon Musk, the CEO or founder of these three companies, attributed his departure from California to political reasons. Musk moved X and SpaceX from California to Starbase, Texas due to a transgender law, and Tesla was relocated from the Bay Area to Texas earlier.
3. Charles Schwab:
In late 2019, Charles Schwab decided to leave California due to high costs and taxes in the state. Founder Charles Schwab mentioned that the expenses of operating in California were significantly higher than in other places, leading to the move to Westlake, Texas.
4. Oracle:
Oracle relocated from California to Texas in 2020, allowing employees to choose their work location and continue remote work. CEO Larry Ellison also moved to Hawaii in 2020 and shifted assets out of California ahead of a proposed billionaire tax. Oracle later moved from Texas to Nashville, Tennessee.
5. Public Storage:
Public Storage, founded in California, announced its move from Glendale to Frisco, Texas in February, citing a better talent pool in Texas as one of the reasons for the relocation.
Other companies that have left California include Hewlett Packard Enterprise, McKesson, Blaze Pizza, John Paul Mitchell Systems, D-Wave Quantum Inc, Palantir, Yamaha, and Neutrogena.
The trend of companies leaving California continues as businesses seek more favorable environments to operate and grow.
