Tom Steyer’s paid influencer army revealed in filings
Billionaire gubernatorial candidate Tom Steyer is currently facing backlash for allegedly paying influencers and meme accounts to boost his popularity, without proper disclosure to voters. According to campaign filings, Steyer has spent over $130 million on his campaign, with a significant portion going towards Gen Z creators who failed to disclose their paid relationships with the hedge fund billionaire.
The California Fair Political Practices Commission has launched an investigation into Steyer’s spending on influencers, including payments to influencers like Carlos Eduardo Espina, Isaiah Washington, Neesh Riaz, Yegneh Mahfaher, Elizabeth Weber, Jason Chu, Madeline Hart, Francis Dominic, and Javier Knight. These influencers were compensated for promoting Steyer’s campaign, with amounts ranging from $1,500 to $10,000.
Critics have raised concerns about the lack of transparency in these paid partnerships, as some influencers deleted posts or failed to disclose their financial ties to Steyer. Beatrice Gomberg, a California creator, filed a complaint with the FPPC, highlighting the deceptive practices employed by Steyer’s campaign.
Additionally, Steyer’s team reportedly approached other content creators with offers of payment for creating content promoting the billionaire candidate. This has sparked outrage on platforms like Instagram and TikTok, with users questioning the authenticity of the campaign’s influencer marketing strategy.
Despite the allegations, Steyer’s spokesperson Kevin Liao has defended the campaign’s actions, stating that all payments are publicly disclosed as required by California law. However, the FPPC is currently investigating the potential violations of the Political Reform Act related to advertisement disclaimers and transparency in paid sponsorships.
Overall, the controversy surrounding Steyer’s influencer campaign highlights the challenges of political advertising in the digital age and raises important questions about the ethics of using social media influencers to sway voter opinion. Voters deserve transparency and honesty from political candidates, and it is essential for campaigns to adhere to legal guidelines to maintain the integrity of the electoral process.
