Tow-truck scammers’ devious scheme to talk fearful SoCal drivers’ out of their cars

Tow-truck drivers in Southern California have been exploiting vulnerable drivers involved in car accidents by convincing them to hand over their vehicles before charging exorbitant fees to retrieve them. One such victim, Brittany Williams, found herself in this situation and ended up paying $3,000 to get her car back from a tow yard, as reported by ABC7.

Williams had been in a car crash and, before she could contact the authorities or her insurance provider, a tow-truck driver arrived at the scene. Claiming to have been contacted by the police, the driver persuaded Williams to give up her car, promising no charges and offering to provide an estimate. However, it later turned out that the driver had deceived her, as he was not sent by the police. When Williams tried to reach him, the line was disconnected.

After tracking down her car at a tow yard with the help of the police, Williams was shocked to discover that she was responsible for the $3,000 bill to retrieve it because she had signed a receipt allowing the tow-truck driver to take her car away. The whole experience left her feeling like she was in a “nightmare.”

An investigation is now underway to locate the driver, with the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office warning drivers about these “tow truck bandits.” These individuals monitor radio traffic and rush to accident scenes, posing as helpful tow-truck operators. However, once they tow the car, they demand inflated fees or refuse to return the vehicle until the charges are paid, which constitutes fraud and is illegal.

To avoid falling victim to such scams, LAPD Lt. Scott Moffitt advised drivers not to sign blank invoices or work orders and to be cautious if a tow-truck driver is unwilling to bring the vehicle to the desired location. He also recommended looking for a visible name or logo on the tow truck, taking photos of the driver, license plate, and vehicle, and being vigilant for any suspicious behavior.

In light of these incidents, it is essential for drivers to be aware of these fraudulent practices and take necessary precautions to protect themselves from falling prey to unscrupulous tow-truck operators.
