Trump administration pitches others to join new coalition to reopen Strait of Hormuz
The Trump administration is actively seeking the collaboration of other nations to establish an international coalition aimed at reopening the vital waterway of the Strait of Hormuz. This initiative, known as the “Maritime Freedom Construct,” is designed to facilitate diplomatic efforts, including the coordination of sanctions and information sharing to ensure safe passage through the strait.
In a recent internal communication from the State Department to diplomatic posts worldwide, officials urged diplomats to announce the formation of this coalition and solicit the participation of partner countries by a specified deadline. The primary objective of the Maritime Freedom Construct is to enhance maritime domain awareness and support the secure transit of commercial vessels and their crews through the waterway.
The United Kingdom and France have already initiated a multilateral effort involving over 30 nations to secure the strait, potentially deploying military assets if a peace agreement is achieved. However, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth criticized the European efforts, suggesting a more proactive approach to safeguarding the critical Gulf waterway.
Iran’s Navy commander denounced the U.S. blockade as “piracy” and labeled American actions as “maritime terrorism.” He emphasized Iran’s control over the strait and threatened operational and tactical measures against any incursions. Meanwhile, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned of dire consequences for the global energy supply due to disruptions caused by the conflict in Iran and the strait’s closure.
The coalition, to be led by the U.S. Departments of State and Defense under U.S. Central Command, will operate from Washington, D.C., and Florida, respectively. The State-led component will serve as the diplomatic hub, engaging partners and the shipping industry, while the Pentagon component will coordinate real-time maritime traffic and communicate directly with vessels transiting the strait.
Overall, the establishment of the Maritime Freedom Construct signifies a concerted effort to address security concerns in the region and ensure the uninterrupted flow of maritime traffic through the vital Strait of Hormuz. This collaborative approach underscores the importance of international cooperation in safeguarding global maritime interests and maintaining stability in the strategically significant waterway.
