Trump Cabinet Official Offers Most Undiplomatic Commentary On Iran World Cup Exit
U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin expressed his joy over Iran’s elimination from the World Cup by doing a “happy dance,” as reported by Sports Business Journal on Monday.
The Iranian team narrowly missed advancing to the knockout rounds of the tournament. Despite drawing all three matches in Group G, they finished as the ninth-best third-place team after Austria’s last-minute goal against Algeria. The top eight third-place teams secured spots in the round of 32.
Mullin openly celebrated Iran’s exit, stating during a World Cup security briefing in Washington that he was relieved they were eliminated. He expressed his satisfaction by saying, “I’m so glad they’re gone,” and emphasized his happiness that they were not returning due to the difficulties the team presented.
