Trump says he’s hiking tariffs on EU cars and trucks to 25%
President Trump Announces Tariff Hike on EU Cars and Trucks
President Trump declared on Friday his intention to increase tariffs on cars and trucks imported from the European Union to 25%, citing the EU’s failure to comply with a trade deal agreed upon last year.
In a post on Truth Social, the president stated, “I am pleased to announce that, based on the fact the European Union is not complying with our fully agreed to Trade Deal, next week I will be increasing Tariffs charged to the European Union for Cars and Trucks coming into the United States. The Tariff will be increased to 25%.”
Last year, the U.S. and the EU reached an agreement that included a 15% tariff on imports of European cars, pharmaceuticals, and other products.
President Trump clarified that the increased levy would not apply to vehicles produced in the U.S., with heavy-duty trucks already facing a 25% tariff rate. He emphasized, “It is fully understood and agreed that, if they produce Cars and Trucks in U.S.A. Plants, there will be NO TARIFF.”
Speaking to reporters, the president stated that the tariff hike would compel the EU to expedite their factory production.
Although the EU and U.S. agreed to eliminate tariffs on specific goods in their framework last year, a European official mentioned that the European Parliament must pass a regulation to allow for zero tariffs on American goods. Delays in this process were attributed to political issues in Europe and disagreements over Greenland’s future with the U.S.
