Trump says multiple people arrested over alleged vandalism at Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool
President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that multiple individuals had been arrested by the U.S. Park Police for allegedly vandalizing the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. This iconic landmark had recently undergone a costly renovation by the Trump administration, but has been marred by issues such as algae growth and peeling paint.
Visitors have been flocking to the pool over the weekend, sharing photos and videos on social media showcasing the deterioration of the pool’s condition. Trump took to social media to express his outrage over the vandalism, emphasizing the severity of the crimes and threatening potential jail time for the perpetrators.
The Interior Department had just completed a $14.65 million repainting project on the Reflecting Pool, which exceeded the estimated cost by $4 million. Despite this recent renovation, the pool’s lining began to peel, prompting Trump to pledge immediate repairs.
In a series of social media posts, Trump made unsubstantiated claims that chemicals had been used to sabotage the pool’s painted surface. He also hinted at the possibility of draining the pool partially to address the peeling lining, which he alleged was intentionally damaged.
Trump referenced markings on the National Mall and suggested that corrosive chemicals had been poured into the pool by vandals, causing further damage. He also mentioned a large gash on a monument’s facade, attributing it to malicious intent.
One individual, identified as 67-year-old David Hearn, was arrested near the Reflecting Pool but denied any involvement in the vandalism. Hearn, a former U.S. Olympian canoeist, maintained his innocence and claimed he was wrongly apprehended by authorities.
Hearn faces a misdemeanor charge of destruction of government property and is set to appear in D.C. Superior Court on July 9. Legal representation for Hearn was not immediately available.
The U.S. Park Police did not provide immediate responses to inquiries regarding the arrests mentioned by Trump. The situation at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool remains contentious, with ongoing efforts to address the vandalism and ensure the preservation of this historic site.
