TSA PreCheck offers discount to younger travelers. Here’s what to know.

Travelers aged 30 and under can now take advantage of a special promotion from the Transportation Security Administration’s PreCheck program, starting this Friday. In an effort to encourage young travelers to enroll, the agency is offering a $20 discount on the signup fee, bringing the cost of a five-year membership down to $56.75 or $65, depending on the enrollment method.

Normally, enrolling in TSA PreCheck costs between $79.95 and $85, but this limited-time offer is aimed at making the program more accessible to a younger demographic. The discounted rate is available through authorized enrollment providers such as CLEAR, IDEMIA, and Telos.

It’s important to note that only first-time TSA PreCheck enrollees are eligible for the discount. The agency sees this promotion as a great opportunity for recent college and high school graduates who are looking to enhance their summer travel plans.

Benefits of TSA PreCheck

Individuals who enroll in TSA PreCheck enjoy expedited security screening at airports across the country. This includes shorter wait times, the ability to leave electronics and compliant liquids in their bags, and the option to keep belts and light jackets on during the screening process.

How to Enroll in TSA PreCheck

The enrollment process begins online and requires applicants to complete an in-person appointment. Once approved, travelers will receive a “Known Traveler Number” to use when booking flights, ensuring their TSA PreCheck status is reflected on boarding passes. Confirmation typically takes three to five days.

Current Airfare Trends

As summer approaches, airfares are on the rise due to increased jet fuel costs stemming from global tensions, such as the situation in Iran. Despite the higher fares, travel demand remains strong. Industry experts predict that airfares will continue to increase, potentially discouraging budget-conscious consumers from flying.

According to data from online travel site Kayak, the average U.S. domestic round-trip economy ticket in mid-April was $358, up 18% from the previous year. International round-trip fares departing from the U.S. averaged $1,074, marking a 12% increase from the same time last year.
