World Cup US Win Vs. Paraguay Scores Record Ratings for Fox, Telemundo

The 2022 World Cup has kicked off in style, setting new records for both Fox Sports and Telemundo. The US Soccer Men’s National Team’s victory over Paraguay on Friday drew in a staggering 16 million viewers, marking it as the most-watched USMNT World Cup broadcast in English-language history, according to Fox Sports ratings.

On the other hand, Telemundo reported a viewership of 12.1 million for Thursday’s Mexico vs. South Africa game, making it the most-watched World Cup match in Spanish-language history.

The U.S.-Paraguay match, held at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, had an average viewership of 15,986,000 across Fox, Fox One, and Tubi, peaking at 18.86 million viewers. It also set a record as the most-streamed English-language USMNT match ever, with 1.13 million viewers tuning in on Tubi.

The game saw a significant 106% increase in viewership compared to the first USMNT group stage match against Wales in 2022. Similarly, Telemundo saw a massive 156% surge in viewership compared to the Wales match.

In addition to breaking records on English-language platforms, the U.S.-Paraguay match also made history on Spanish-language TV, attracting an average of 8.9 million viewers on Telemundo, Peacock, and Telemundo’s streaming platforms. It became the most-watched USMNT World Cup match in Spanish-language television history and the most-watched World Cup group stage match not featuring Mexico.

Thursday’s Mexico vs. South Africa game, where Mexico secured a 2-0 victory, not only set a new record as the most-watched World Cup match in Spanish-language history but also became the most-streamed Mexico World Cup match and group stage match in Spanish-language history. It also achieved the title of the most-watched World Cup opening game and the most-watched group stage game not involving the US team.
