38-year-old Italian chain down to 9 locations nationwide
Italian cuisine has firmly established itself as a staple in American culture, with a significant presence in the restaurant industry. According to Krishnendu Ray, director of NYU’s Food Studies program, out of the 800,000 restaurants in the U.S., approximately 100,000 serve Italian food. While many of these establishments are pizzerias and casual eateries, there is also a notable number of fine dining Italian restaurants.
Contrastingly, Chinese and Mexican cuisines have around 40,000 restaurants each in the U.S., with fewer upscale dining options available. However, Italian food remains a popular choice among Americans, with data from the National Restaurant Association indicating that 61% of people surveyed eat Italian food at least once a month.
Despite the enduring demand for Italian cuisine, Romano’s Macaroni Grill, once a prominent chain, has faced challenges in recent years. The chain, initially positioned as a competitor to Olive Garden, was founded in 1988 by restaurateur Phil Romano and later acquired by Brinker International. Under Brinker’s ownership, the chain grew rapidly, reaching 237 locations in 2006.
However, a series of ownership changes and economic downturns led to Romano’s Macaroni Grill filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2017, resulting in the closure of numerous locations. The chain struggled to adapt to evolving consumer preferences and increased competition in the casual dining sector.
While Romano’s Macaroni Grill has made efforts to revitalize its brand by introducing a quick-serve concept called Twisted Mac and continuing to offer franchises, it has experienced a decline in sales and closures of additional locations. Despite these challenges, the company remains committed to delivering authentic Italian hospitality to customers.
In a competitive restaurant industry landscape, Romano’s Macaroni Grill’s story serves as a cautionary tale of the importance of adapting to changing market dynamics and consumer preferences. As the chain navigates its way through ongoing challenges, it remains to be seen whether it can regain its former glory in the culinary world.
