5 soldiers injured in shooting at Fort Stewart in Georgia, Army sergeant in custody
A shocking incident took place at Fort Stewart in Georgia on Wednesday, where a U.S. Army sergeant allegedly shot five other soldiers. The shooting occurred at the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team area and was reported at 10:56 a.m. The suspect was swiftly apprehended at 11:35 a.m., bringing the situation under control. According to a U.S. official, the suspect had previously been arrested on a DUI charge earlier in the year. Fortunately, there were no reported fatalities resulting from the shooting. The conditions of the soldiers who were shot were not immediately known, but two of the victims were rushed to Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah, a Level 1 trauma center.
Fort Stewart, located about 40 miles southwest of Savannah, was the site of this tragic event. Georgia Governor Brian Kemp took to social media to express his solidarity with the victims, their families, and all those who serve. President Donald Trump has been briefed on the shooting, as confirmed by White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain unclear at this time. It is important to note that access to combat firearms for U.S. military personnel on base is heavily regulated, with guns typically stored in an armory. Firearms are only utilized during field training exercises, after which they are returned to the armory. While military personnel are permitted to own personal firearms, there are strict protocols governing their presence on base.
