7 Mistakes You’re Making with Stress During an Inflation Spike (And How to Fix Them)
I woke up at 4:45 AM today, and before the coffee even finished brewing, the notification light on my phone was already blinking like a distress signal. Another headline about interest rates. Another report on the "sticky" cost of living.
I stood there in the kitchen, watching the steam rise, and felt that familiar tightening in my chest. You know the one. It’s that invisible weight that sits right on your sternum when you realize the math you did last month doesn’t work this month.
When you’re the person everyone leans on: the CEO, the founder, the head of the household: inflation isn't just a percentage point on a chart. It’s a tax on your peace of mind. It’s a constant, nagging noise that tries to tell you that you’re losing ground, even while you’re running full tilt.
The reality? Most leaders handle this stress the wrong way. They treat inflation like a financial problem, but they fight it with emotional reactions. And that’s where the real damage happens.
Here are the 7 mistakes I see entrepreneurs and executives making right now when the numbers start climbing, and exactly how to fix them before they break your business: or your spirit.
1. You’re Treating Stress as a Secret, Not a Strategic Variable
Most of the high-level leaders I mentor think that feeling stressed about a 10% hike in vendor costs is a personal failing. They tuck it away. They "tough it out."
The Fix: Stress is a business risk. Treat it like one. If your focus is fragmented because you’re worried about margins, that affects your decision-making. Bring the "stress" conversation into your leadership meetings. Don't just talk about the numbers; talk about the capacity of the team to handle the pressure of those numbers. When you name it, you can manage it.
2. The "Swing" Between Panic and Paralysis
I see this every time the market gets volatile. A leader either goes on a firing-and-slashing spree (panic) or they put their head in the sand and hope it "blows over" (paralysis). Both are driven by the same fight-or-flight response.
The Fix: Build a "Review-Reassess-Respond" cadence. Don’t make decisions based on the 8 AM news cycle. Set a monthly or bi-weekly threshold review. If margins hit X, we do Y. If revenue stays at Z, we hold. Pre-defining your moves takes the emotion out of the moment.
3. Cutting the "Good Weight"
When inflation spikes, the first thing people want to do is slash the budget. But here’s the mistake: they cut the muscle instead of the fat. They stop marketing, they stop training their team, and they delay the very technology that would make them more efficient.
The Fix: Distinguish between "Maintenance Costs" and "Investment Costs." You don’t win a race by taking the engine out of the car to make it lighter. Cut the waste: the unused subscriptions, the inefficient processes: but double down on what generates revenue. Efficiency is your best hedge against rising costs.
4. Leaking Your Panic to the Team
Your team is watching you. They see the tight jaw. They hear the shorter-than-usual emails. When you leak stress, you create a culture of anxiety. And anxious people don't innovate; they hide.
The Fix: Selective vulnerability. It’s okay to say, "The market is tight, and we have to be disciplined." It is not okay to let them think the ship is sinking just because you’re having a bad morning. Your job is to be the thermostat, not the thermometer. You set the temperature; you don't just reflect how hot it is outside.
5. Thinking You Can "Wait it Out" on Pricing
I get it. You don’t want to lose customers. You’re scared that if you raise your rates, everyone will run for the hills. So you eat the costs. Your margins shrink. Your stress grows. You’re literally paying for your customers' loyalty with your own mental health.
The Fix: Planned, transparent communication. Don't do a dozen small, "sneaky" price hikes. Do one well-explained adjustment. Explain the value, acknowledge the reality, and move on. The customers who only stay because you’re the cheapest are the first ones who will leave you anyway.
6. The "Solo Hero" Trap
When things get heavy, leaders tend to isolate. You think you’re "protecting" everyone by carrying the burden alone. But isolation is where stress turns into burnout.
The Fix: Get in a room with people who speak your language. Whether it’s a mentor, a CEO group, or just a peer who understands the weight of a payroll, you need a place to offload the noise. You can't lead an army if you're stuck in a hole by yourself.
7. Letting Your Routine Slip When You Need It Most
This is the one that gets me every time. When things get busy and the "inflation spike" feels like a crisis, the first things we drop are our morning clarity, our workouts, and our boundaries. We think we don't have time for them.
The Fix: Your routine is not a luxury; it’s your infrastructure. If the building is shaking, you don't tear down the foundation. Double down on your morning discipline. Get your 4 minutes of clarity before the world starts demanding things from you. If you lose your morning, you’ve already lost the day to the noise.
One Move to Make Today
Stop looking at the macro-economic charts for five minutes. Instead, look at your calendar. Is there space in there for you to think, or is it just a back-to-back marathon of firefighting?
If you want to survive an inflation spike, you have to protect your most valuable asset: your ability to see clearly.
Move on purpose today. Come home intact.
