Trump envoy Witkoff arrives in Moscow ahead of Ukraine ceasefire deadline
President Donald Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, has landed in Moscow for anticipated talks with Russian officials, according to Russian state media reports. This marks Witkoff’s fifth visit to Moscow since Trump assumed office, with a focus on addressing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine that commenced in February 2022.
Upon his arrival at Vnukovo Airport, Witkoff was greeted by Kirill Dmitriev, the head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund, as per Tass and Interfax news agencies. It is expected that Witkoff will engage in discussions with Russian leadership during his time in Moscow, with a source revealing that meetings are scheduled for Wednesday.
During his previous visit on April 25, Witkoff held talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin. In light of escalating tensions, Trump has threatened to impose further economic sanctions, including targeting Russian fossil fuel export customers like India and China, if Putin does not agree to a ceasefire by August 8.
