Oscar Piastri reflects  on McLaren’s struggles in Baku

Oscar Piastri had a disappointing Azerbaijan Grand Prix as he crashed out on the opening lap, marking his first DNF of the season. The McLaren driver, who came into Baku as the championship leader with a 34-race points streak, had a messy weekend that started with a false start and a lock-up at Turn 5. McLaren, as a team, also missed out on an opportunity to seal the constructors’ title, making it one of their toughest outings of the season.

The troubles for McLaren began on Friday at the Baku City Circuit when Piastri faced a PU issue during FP1, while his teammate Lando Norris hit a wall in FP2, breaking his suspension. Piastri himself brushed the barriers, resulting in both cars being outside the top three for the first time this year. Additionally, the Australian received a reprimand for not slowing down enough for yellow flags.

Qualifying saw Piastri drive into the Turn 3 wall, leading to a chassis change overnight. The race day brought more problems as he jump-started, got dropped to the back due to anti-stall, and then locked up at Turn 5, crashing into the barrier and ending his race on the opening lap.

Despite Norris finishing seventh in the race, McLaren could not salvage much from the weekend. Piastri still leads the F1 drivers’ standings, but Max Verstappen’s consecutive wins have narrowed the gap to 69 points after Baku. The next race in Singapore will be crucial for McLaren, with Piastri and Norris needing clean weekends and fewer errors to keep the title fight competitive.

In a post-race debrief, Norris reflected on a “tricky race and a tricky weekend,” mentioning that there were limited strategic options for a better result. With seven grand prix weekends remaining, McLaren will need to regroup quickly to stay in the championship contention.

The weekend in Baku belonged to Verstappen, who won from pole position for the second consecutive week, highlighting how errors can impact the championship battle. As McLaren looks ahead to the Singapore Grand Prix, they will need to focus on consistency and performance to maintain their position at the top of the standings.
