At least 10 shot, 1 fatally, at Michigan church set on fire by the gunman: Police

Multiple individuals were shot during a crowded service at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc, Michigan, as confirmed by local authorities. Grand Blanc Police Chief William Renye reported that at least 10 parishioners were shot, resulting in one fatality. Two other victims were in critical condition, while the perpetrator, a 40-year-old man, was killed in a confrontation with law enforcement. The suspect intentionally set fire to the church before the shooting took place.

Renye stated that more victims might be discovered once the scene is secured. The incident occurred at 10:25 a.m. while over 100 people were attending the service. The assailant drove a vehicle through the front entrance, exited the vehicle, and began firing shots. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) and FBI responded to the scene.

Following the shooting, a fire broke out and escalated into a five-alarm blaze, causing part of the building to collapse. By 1 p.m., firefighters managed to extinguish the fire. Investigators are actively working to uncover the motive behind the attack and ascertain if there were any threats directed at the church prior to the incident. The timing of the shooting coinciding with the recent passing of Russell M. Nelson, the president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, is also under investigation.

President Donald Trump expressed his concerns about the incident, labeling it as a targeted attack on Christians in the United States. He assured that the FBI is leading the investigation and emphasized the need to end the violence. Vice President JD Vance also condemned the shooting and fire, assuring that the entire administration is closely monitoring the situation.

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer extended her sympathies to the Grand Blanc community, denouncing violence in places of worship. The FBI has deployed over 100 agents to support the ongoing investigation. FBI Director Kash Patel condemned the act of violence and offered prayers for the victims and their families.

A spokesperson for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints acknowledged the tragic event, confirming that the congregation was targeted during Sunday worship. The church expressed gratitude towards emergency responders and requested prayers for all those affected. In the face of uncertainty, the church finds solace in their faith in Jesus Christ and hopes for peace and healing for everyone involved.
