Fire erupts at Chevron refinery in El Segundo
Firefighters were working tirelessly to extinguish a fire at a Chevron refinery in Southern California late on Thursday, officials confirmed. The blaze resulted in a massive fireball erupting at the facility in El Segundo, a city located in Los Angeles County. The cause of the fire was not immediately determined, and it was unclear if there were any injuries as a result of the incident.
Governor Gavin Newsom was briefed on the situation, with his office stating that they were coordinating with local and state agencies in real-time to protect the surrounding community and ensure public safety. A 3-hour shelter-in-place order was issued for areas within the Tree Section of Manhattan Beach, urging residents to bring all people and pets indoors for safety.
L.A. Mayor Karen Bass also received a briefing on the fire and had discussions with Holly J. Mitchell, the supervisor representing El Segundo. Mayor Bass assured that the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) was prepared to provide assistance if needed and confirmed that there were no known impacts on Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) at that time. She pledged to monitor the situation closely.
The fire department in Torrance, California, also acknowledged the incident, stating that they were aware of the fire at the Chevron refinery but reassured residents that there was no impact on the city.
