NFL fines Jerry Jones $250,000 for obscene MetLife gesture he says was inadvertent
The NFL has fined Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones $250,000 for making an obscene gesture towards fans at MetLife Stadium. The incident occurred during the Cowboys’ 37-22 victory over the New York Jets on Sunday. Jones claims that the gesture was intended for Cowboys fans, not Jets fans, and was meant to be a “thumbs up” to celebrate the team’s victory.
In a statement on his radio show, Jones explained that he was caught up in the excitement of the moment after Dak Prescott’s fourth touchdown pass and mistakenly made the inappropriate gesture. He insists that there was no ill intent behind his actions and that he quickly realized his mistake.
Jones has until Friday to appeal the fine, and the team has indicated that he is likely to do so. This incident is not the first time an NFL owner has been fined for inappropriate behavior towards fans. In 2023, Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper was fined $300,000 for throwing a drink at fans in Jacksonville, and in 2009, the late Bud Adams was fined $250,000 for making obscene gestures after a victory over Buffalo.
It is important for team owners to remember that their actions are always under scrutiny, and they must conduct themselves in a professional manner at all times. The NFL takes these matters seriously and will not hesitate to enforce disciplinary actions when necessary.
