Melanie King calls Gavin Newsom the “biggest beneficiary” of Palisades wildfire: Details explored
YouTube personality Melanie King recently called out California Governor Gavin Newsom after authorities arrested a man suspected of starting the devastating Palisades wildfire in Los Angeles. The arrest of a 29-year-old man for starting the fire, which killed 12 people and destroyed over 6,000 homes in January 2025, prompted King to speak out against Newsom. Taking to her official X account on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, King accused Newsom of benefiting from the wildfires and questioned the whereabouts of $100 million in relief aid. She urged for a thorough investigation into the matter.
The Palisades wildfire, one of the most destructive blazes in Los Angeles history, erupted on January 7 near a hiking trail, scorching over 23,000 acres and causing an estimated $150 billion in damage. Another fire, the Eaton Fire, also ignited on the same day in the LA area, claiming the lives of 19 people and destroying 9,400 structures. The suspect, Jonathan Rinderknecht, was apprehended in Florida and charged with destruction of property by means of fire. Evidence collected from his digital devices, including an image generated on ChatGPT depicting a burning city, linked him to the crime.
In response to the arrest, Governor Gavin Newsom commended the U.S. Department of Justice and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives for capturing Rinderknecht. However, Newsom criticized President Donald Trump and Congress for failing to provide sufficient federal disaster aid to the wildfire victims. Newsom highlighted the need for $40 billion in funding from Congress to cover various costs related to housing, infrastructure, economic development, and forest management. He expressed disappointment in the lack of support from the federal government towards those impacted by the arsonist’s actions.
The Palisades wildfire devastated entire neighborhoods, including parts of Topanga and Malibu, where homes of celebrities like Paris Hilton, Mel Gibson, and Jeff Bridges were destroyed. Newsom’s plea for federal aid underscored the urgent need for assistance in rebuilding and recovery efforts. As the investigation into the Palisades fire continues, the focus remains on holding those responsible for the catastrophic blaze accountable.
