Oscar-winning actress Diane Keaton dies at 79

Diane Keaton, the acclaimed actress known for her unforgettable performances in films like “Annie Hall,” “The Godfather,” and “The First Wives Club,” has passed away at the age of 79. The news of her death was confirmed by producer Dori Rath, though details about the cause of her passing have not been disclosed. The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a medical call at Keaton’s Brentwood home on Saturday morning and transported her to the hospital.

Keaton rose to stardom in the 1970s with her roles in “The Godfather” series and her collaborations with director Woody Allen. Her portrayal of Annie Hall in the film of the same name earned her an Academy Award for Best Actress in 1978. Known for her unique sense of humor and timeless style, Keaton went on to star in a variety of successful films, including “Baby Boom,” “Father of the Bride,” “The First Wives Club,” “Something’s Gotta Give,” and the “Book Club” series.

Born Diane Hall in Los Angeles in 1946, Keaton was the eldest of four siblings. She began her acting career on Broadway in “Hair” and later ventured into directing, producing, photography, and writing, becoming a bestselling author. In a 2020 interview with ABC News, Keaton opened up about her complex relationship with her brother Randy, who struggled with mental illness and alcohol.

Celebrities, including Kimberly Williams-Paisley and Mary Steenburgen, expressed their condolences over Keaton’s passing. Williams-Paisley, who worked with Keaton on “Father of the Bride,” described the experience as a highlight of her life, praising Keaton for her kindness, talent, and laughter. Steenburgen referred to Keaton as “magic” and expressed her love and admiration for the late actress.

Keaton is survived by her two children, Dexter and Duke. Her last Instagram post, shared on April 11, featured a photo of her with her beloved Golden Retriever, Reggie.
