Trump, world leaders gather in Egypt for ceasefire deal signing with Netanyahu absent
President Donald Trump recently participated in a summit in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, along with over 20 world leaders to discuss the future of Gaza in light of the Israel-Hamas ceasefire agreement. The summit included prominent figures such as Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and former Prime Minister Tony Blair, among others.
During the summit, a signing ceremony took place where Trump, alongside Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, and Qatari Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, signed a document outlining the rules and regulations of the ceasefire agreement. Trump emphasized the historical significance of the agreement, stating that it took 3,000 years to reach this point and expressing confidence that it would hold up.
The memorandum signed during the summit, titled “The Trump Declaration for Enduring Peace and Prosperity,” highlighted the commitment of the leaders to work towards a lasting peace that ensures the prosperity and security of both Palestinians and Israelis. It emphasized resolving future disputes through diplomatic means rather than force, acknowledging the need for a comprehensive and sustainable resolution in the Middle East.
Notably absent from the summit were representatives from Hamas and Israel. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s absence was attributed to the Jewish holiday, despite being personally invited by Trump. Prior to the summit, Trump and Netanyahu had exchanged praises for each other, with Trump declaring a “new dawn in the Middle East” and stating that the war in Gaza was over.
The ceasefire agreement included the release of Israeli hostages by Hamas and the freeing of Palestinian prisoners by Israel, leading to emotional reunions between families in Tel Aviv and Gaza. However, uncertainties remain regarding the future steps following the ceasefire, particularly in terms of Trump’s involvement in shaping post-war Gaza.
Trump hinted at the progress of the second phase of his peace plan, alluding to the rebuilding process that lies ahead. He expressed optimism about the region’s ability to rebuild and move forward, emphasizing the need for a collective effort to ensure lasting peace and prosperity.
In his interactions with Egypt’s president and during his speech at the summit, Trump also extended an invitation to Iran to engage in peace talks, suggesting that Iran could benefit from cooperation with the administration. He expressed readiness to lift sanctions on Iran once they are willing to engage in dialogue.
The summit in Sharm El-Sheikh marked a significant moment in the ongoing efforts towards peace in the Middle East, with world leaders coming together to support a ceasefire agreement and pave the way for a more stable and prosperous future for Gaza.
