Passenger bus crash in northeastern Brazil leaves 17 dead
SAO PAULO — Tragedy struck in northeastern Brazil as a passenger bus crashed into a sand embankment, resulting in the death of at least 17 individuals, authorities confirmed on Saturday.
The bus, which was carrying around 30 passengers, veered off course in Saloá, Pernambuco, on its way to Brumado, Bahia. The exact number of injured passengers, who were swiftly transported to nearby medical facilities, remains unclear at this time.
According to police reports, the driver lost control of the vehicle, swerved into the opposite lane, and collided with rocks before ultimately overturning when it hit the sand embankment.
Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the tragic accident. The driver, who sustained minor injuries, tested negative for alcohol consumption, as confirmed by the police.
Expressing his condolences, Bahia Governor Jerônimo Teixeira assured that rescue operations and victim identification are being diligently carried out. “I am closely monitoring the situation with my team and extend my deepest sympathies to the affected families,” he stated.
The year 2024 saw over 10,000 fatalities in traffic-related incidents in Brazil, according to data from the Ministry of Transportation.
This unfortunate incident adds to a series of bus accidents in Brazil, including a similar tragedy in southeastern Brazil in April that claimed 11 lives, and a collision involving a bus and a truck in Sao Paulo state in February that resulted in the loss of 12 lives.
Last September, a devastating bus accident involving the Coritiba Crocodiles football team left three individuals dead. The team has since found inspiration in the NFL as they strive to rebuild and recover from the tragedy.
