Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups charged in illegal poker operation tied to Mafia: Sources
The Portland Trail Blazers head coach, Chauncey Billups, has found himself in hot water after being charged in an illegal poker operation linked to the Mafia, as reported by law enforcement sources to ABC News. Billups, who is currently in his fifth season as head coach, was arrested in Oregon and is expected to appear in court on Thursday.
Despite the legal troubles looming over him, Billups led the Trail Blazers in their season opener against the Minnesota Timberwolves, which unfortunately ended in a loss. Known for his stellar career as a player, particularly with the Detroit Pistons, Billups retired in 2014 after a successful run in the NBA. A five-time All-Star, he played a crucial role in leading the Pistons to an NBA title in 2004 and was named Finals MVP.
Drafted as the No. 3 overall pick in 1997, Billups amassed impressive career statistics, averaging 15.2 points and 5.4 assists per game over his 17-year tenure in the league. In a separate but related case, Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier and former Cleveland Cavaliers player and assistant coach Damon Jones have also been charged in connection to an illegal gambling operation.
The allegations suggest that Rozier and Jones provided insider information to four co-defendants, who in turn shared this information with a network of sports bettors. These bettors allegedly placed wagers using nonpublic information, violating the rules of online sportsbooks and retail betting outlets. One specific incident cited in the indictment involved Rozier notifying a co-defendant of his early departure from a game due to an injury, leading to substantial wagers being placed on him underperforming.
FBI Director Kash Patel is expected to address these charges, along with other law enforcement officials, in a news conference in New York City. Rozier, currently in his 11th year in the league, has been a consistent performer, averaging 13.9 points per game over 665 appearances. The Boston Celtics alum has been a valuable asset in playoff runs and joined the Hornets in recent years.
As the legal proceedings unfold, it’s essential to stay updated on this developing story for any new developments. The NBA has seen its fair share of controversies involving gambling, with former player Jontay Porter facing a lifetime ban for fraudulent activities related to betting on games.
