Sisters with mysterious symptoms diagnosed with same rare brain condition: “You’ve got to be kidding”
The Higginbotham family’s journey with Chiari malformation is a story of strength, resilience, and hope. When parents Paul and Ashlee noticed something was off with their youngest daughter Austyn, they never imagined the road ahead. Austyn’s constant crying, lack of sleep, and developmental delays led to a diagnosis of Chiari malformation, a rare condition where the lower part of the brain protrudes out of the skull and puts pressure on the spinal cord.
After Austyn underwent successful brain surgery, the family thought their ordeal was over. However, their world was rocked again when they discovered that their other daughters, Amelia, Aubrey, and Adalee, also had Chiari malformation and tethered spinal cords. The Higginbothams found themselves back in the operating room multiple times, facing the unknown with each surgery.
Despite the challenges, the Higginbotham family found light at the end of the tunnel. With the expert care of Dr. Jeffrey Greenfield, the girls underwent successful surgeries and are now thriving. The once constant pain and symptoms have subsided, and the house is now filled with laughter and joy.
The Higginbothams are grateful for the care they received and the newfound health of their daughters. They credit Dr. Greenfield with giving them their family back and consider it the most amazing gift. The journey was a whirlwind, but they are thankful to be where they are today, enjoying their “new normal” and cherishing every moment of happiness.
As the Higginbotham family continues to move forward, they are grateful for the support and care they have received. Their story is a testament to the power of resilience, love, and the importance of seeking help in times of need.
