NHL to stage 2027 Stadium Series game in Texas
The National Hockey League (NHL) has announced that the Dallas Stars will be hosting the 2027 Stadium Series at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. This will mark the second NHL game at a football stadium in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, following the Winter Classic between the Stars and the Nashville Predators at the Cotton Bowl in 2020, which drew a crowd of over 85,000 fans.
NHL president of content and events, Steve Mayer, expressed excitement about returning to Dallas for another outdoor game, citing the success of the previous event at the Cotton Bowl. The league is confident in filling the massive AT&T Stadium, which has a capacity of 85,000 but can accommodate over 100,000 with standing room only. The goal is to surpass the league’s record attendance of 105,491 set at Michigan Stadium in 2014.
Discussions with the Dallas Cowboys, owners of AT&T Stadium, have been ongoing for several years, with Cowboys owner Jerry Jones advocating for an NHL game at the venue since it opened in 2009. NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman praised Jones for his vision of utilizing the stadium for more than just football.
The upcoming Stadium Series game in 2027 will be the third outdoor-ish game since 2024, following events hosted by the Seattle Kraken and the Florida Panthers. The retractable roof at AT&T Stadium will ensure that the rink-building process is not disrupted by weather, a key factor in the decision to host the game in a covered venue.
Overall, the NHL is looking forward to bringing the excitement of outdoor hockey to AT&T Stadium in 2027 and creating a memorable experience for fans. Stay tuned for more updates on the opponent for the game, which will be announced at a later date.
