Senate unanimously agrees to approve Epstein files bill
The Senate unanimously approved the House bill on Tuesday that calls for the Justice Department to release its Jeffrey Epstein files. This decision came just hours after the House passed the bill, and Minority Leader Chuck Schumer swiftly requested for it to be deemed passed by the Senate without any objections.
President Donald Trump has indicated that he will sign the bill once it reaches his desk, stating, “I’m all for it.” However, in a social media post, Trump emphasized the importance of focusing on his agenda and highlighted various accomplishments of his administration.
The bill, if signed into law, would compel the release of federal records related to Epstein and his associate Ghislaine Maxwell, excluding victims’ names and any child sex abuse material. The Department of Justice has not yet confirmed how it plans to comply with the bill once signed by Trump.
A vigil held on Capitol Hill saw House Democrats and Epstein survivors celebrating the unanimous approval of the bill by the Senate. The legislation requires Attorney General Pam Bondi to make all relevant records available within 30 days of enactment.
While there are concerns about potential exemptions due to ongoing investigations or claims of executive privilege, it is unlikely that the entire Epstein file will be released to the public. The Justice Department may withhold materials related to ongoing investigations or executive privilege claims.
House Speaker Mike Johnson has expressed reservations about fast-tracking the bill without amendments, citing concerns about potential damage to the justice system. However, Senate Majority Leader John Thune dismissed the idea of amending the bill, considering the overwhelming support it received in the House and the president’s willingness to sign it.
Overall, the unanimous approval of the bill by the Senate represents a significant step towards transparency and accountability regarding the Epstein case. The release of these files could shed light on important information related to Epstein’s criminal activities and potentially uncover new leads in ongoing investigations.
