Shocking news emerged from the Mexico-U.S. border as a man’s peculiar behavior caught the attention of border patrol agents. Jesse Agus Martinez, 35, raised suspicion when a significant bulge in his pants turned out to be a bizarre discovery – two live parakeets concealed in his clothing!
Martinez’s attempt to smuggle the rare orange-fronted parakeets, classified as critically endangered, was thwarted by vigilant CBP officers. The birds were found sedated but alive, hidden in small bags within his underwear.
Authorities revealed that Martinez confessed to the act due to lack of proper documentation for the birds’ importation. His plan to store them in a van in a shoebox was quickly foiled by the vigilant border patrol.
Facing federal smuggling charges, Martinez could potentially face a hefty fine of $250,000 and a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison if found guilty. The bizarre incident has sparked an investigation by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
The rescued parakeets have been treated by veterinarians and are now in stable condition after their traumatic ordeal. They are currently under quarantine as part of the ongoing investigation into this bizarre smuggling attempt.
