One Dead, Eight Wounded in Shooting Near Legion Field After Magic City Classic
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. | November 1, 2026 — A night celebrating one of the nation’s most treasured HBCU football traditions ended in tragedy Saturday when a shooting near Legion Field left one person dead and eight others wounded, according to Birmingham police.
Gunfire erupted shortly after 7:50 p.m. October 31 in the 400 block of Graymont Avenue West, after Alabama A&M defeated Alabama State 31–28 in the 85th Magic City Classic. The shooting occurred primarily outside the stadium, near vendors who remained after the game. Police said most spectators and families had already departed.
What police have confirmed
Police reported nine people struck by gunfire. One person died; one wounded person was in critical condition and seven were stable in the initial Sunday update. Officials had not publicly identified the deceased person or the other victims.
Officers recovered multiple firearms and detained one person for questioning. As of the initial reports, no charges or motive had been announced. Being detained for questioning does not establish guilt.
A historic HBCU celebration
The Magic City Classic is a longstanding rivalry between Alabama A&M University and Alabama State University, bringing together alumni, students, marching bands, families and community vendors. Nearly 70,000 fans attended Saturday’s game. The shooting occurred after the game and should not be confused with violence inside the stadium during play.
Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin condemned the violence and expressed solidarity with the victims’ families. Police suspended remaining tailgating activities and asked the public to leave the area while officers investigated.
