ICE arrests woman with family connection to White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt
U.S. immigration authorities have recently detained Bruna Caroline Ferreira, who happens to be the mother of White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt’s nephew. The arrest took place a few weeks ago, as confirmed by Leavitt’s brother, Michael Leavitt. Ferreira, a Brazilian national, has been described by a DHS spokesperson as a “criminal illegal alien” with a previous arrest for battery. She overstayed a visa that expired in 1999 and is currently in removal proceedings at the South Louisiana ICE Processing Center.
According to Michael Leavitt, his 11-year-old son has been living with him since birth but maintains a relationship with his mother. Ferreira’s attorney, Todd Pomerleau, disputes claims of her criminal history and states that she entered the country lawfully, previously held DACA status, and is in the process of obtaining a green card. Pomerleau argues that Ferreira’s arrest was unjust, as she was stopped in her car in Massachusetts without a warrant and now has to litigate her case in Louisiana, far from her home.
The White House has chosen not to comment on the situation. An online fundraising campaign set up by someone claiming to be Ferreira’s sister highlights her positive attributes as a hardworking and kind individual who always puts others before herself. Graziela Dos Santos Rodrigues, the alleged sister, vouches for Ferreira’s character and asks for support during this challenging time.
The connection between Ferreira and Karoline Leavitt is considered coincidental by Pomerleau, who believes it will not impact the legal proceedings. The case has raised questions about immigration policies and the treatment of individuals who have longstanding ties to the United States. As Ferreira’s situation unfolds, it sheds light on the complexities and controversies surrounding immigration enforcement in the country.
