Taylor University fans storm basketball court as part of iconic ‘Silent Night’ Christmas tradition

The annual “Silent Night” tradition at Taylor University in Indiana is anything but calm. This cherished event, now in its 28th year, saw thousands of fans storming the basketball court in celebration of the Trojans’ 10th point during a game against Moody Bible Institute.

Junior Pete Combs’ electrifying dunk ignited the crowd of 2,217 fans, breaking the silence that had enveloped the gymnasium. As part of the tradition, fans must remain silent until the 10th point is scored, at which point chaos ensues.

College students, dressed in a variety of themed costumes, flooded the court within seconds, transforming the atmosphere into a wild, club-like scene. Players from Moody Bible Institute found themselves engulfed by the exuberant student body as they rushed off the court.

Before the game, students are held outside the gym and then released to secure the best seats in the student section. Fred Flintstone impersonators, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson look-alikes, chefs, crayons, Egyptian Pharaohs, and even the Grinch were among the many characters present at the event.

In addition to the on-court festivities, a student dressed as Moses led the crowd in a choreographed movement, symbolically parting the sea of students. The game resumed after the court was cleared, with the Trojans ultimately defeating the Archers from Moody Bible Institute.

The tradition culminated in a heartwarming moment as students locked arms and sang “Silent Night” in unison to end the game. This annual event, which was canceled in 2020 due to COVID-19, holds a special place in the hearts of Taylor University students and fans.

With a 27-1 record in “Silent Night” games, Taylor University has a strong tradition of success in this unique and festive event. The game always takes place on the Friday before finals week and concludes with the singing of “Silent Night,” a fitting end to a night filled with joy and celebration.
