Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro faces subpoena over private home security upgrades after firebombing

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro is under scrutiny for his use of tax dollars on security enhancements at his private residence following an arson attack on his official residence earlier this year. The GOP-led committee in the state legislature has issued subpoenas seeking records related to approximately $1 million in security upgrades at his personal home in the suburbs of Philadelphia, as well as charter flights arranged for the Governor’s Office.

The subpoenas have been sent to the Pennsylvania State Police, the open records officer in the local township where Shapiro’s private residence is located, and the charter flight company. They have until January 16, 2026, to comply with the requests.

In response to the subpoenas, a spokesperson for the governor called the move a “partisan attack” and stated that the security improvements were recommended after the arson attack on the governor’s official residence in Harrisburg in April. The spokesperson emphasized that the security measures were put in place to ensure the safety of the governor and his family.

As Governor Shapiro’s political profile has risen, so too have the threats against him and other high-profile figures. The attack on his official residence occurred after a gathering for Passover, prompting concerns about the governor’s safety and security measures.

Some Republicans in the legislature have criticized the governor for lack of transparency regarding the security upgrades and transportation expenses. State Sen. Jarrett Coleman highlighted the importance of accountability in government spending, stating that administrations should not operate in secrecy when taxpayer funds are involved.

The subpoenas seek a range of documents, including records related to construction, landscaping, equipment, and legal services at the governor’s private residence, as well as communications between the State Police, construction services, and the local township regarding the security upgrades. They also request correspondence between the township and Governor Shapiro or his wife, shedding light on decision-making processes related to the enhancements.

The subpoenas were authorized on party-line votes, with Committee Democrats objecting to the requests as a “fishing expedition.” The investigation into Governor Shapiro’s use of tax dollars for security upgrades is ongoing, with a focus on transparency and accountability in government spending.
