Testimony continues in Day 7 of Luigi Mangione evidence suppression hearing

Luigi Mangione, the accused CEO killer, is back in a Manhattan courtroom for the seventh day as his legal team fights to have evidence excluded from his murder case. The hearing will determine what evidence can be used against him in the trial for the alleged murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson on a Manhattan sidewalk last year.

During Thursday’s proceedings, two supervisory officers testified that police did not need a warrant to search Mangione’s backpack when he was apprehended at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, five days after the shooting. Lt. William Hanelly stated that it was a warrant exception in Pennsylvania for police to search a person and their belongings without a warrant.

The defense has raised concerns about the actions of the Altoona officers, questioning whether they overstepped their authority and failed to follow proper procedures in their haste to solve a high-profile case. The defense has suggested that the officers may have cut corners in their efforts to crack the case quickly.

Hanelly shared that he promised a free sandwich from his favorite local spot, Luigetta’s, to patrolman Joseph Detwiler if he managed to capture the suspected killer. In a text message, Hanelly playfully mentioned that he would buy lunch at Luigetta’s if the officer apprehended the New York City shooter, expressing disbelief that the suspect could be found in a fast-food restaurant hours away from the crime scene.

The hearing is expected to continue into the following week, with Judge Gregory Carro anticipated to deliver a written decision in January. The ongoing proceedings are crucial in determining the admissibility of evidence in Mangione’s murder trial, shaping the course of the legal proceedings moving forward.
